Sisters
-Amy L. Alley
Eyes meet
Across cave fires in the time of the ancients.
Eyes meet
across crowded supermarket lanes today.
The message is the same.
I understand.
I understand what it means to be a
Daughter
Mother
Grandmother
Aunt
Sister
Wife
Woman.
I understand because I, too, am
Daughter
Mother
Grandmother
Aunt
Sister
Wife
Woman.
Maybe you are all of these roles
And I am simply one or two
By blood or choosing it’s no matter.
We are sisters
Not because we understand each other.
But because we are each other.
My Daddy was a Tall Blue Heron
