Another entry for our poetry contest!
dandelion decline
throughout the long cold winter
i was dead under the snow
but with the waking of the birches
and the coming of the sun
i have grown a bitter root
of longing and desire into your garden
and from this root i grew
in loby leaves and hollow stems
from which i climb and peak
in roaring manes of sunspear yellow
a crown entirely befitting
the king of the springtime undergrowth
but spring grew old and so did i
and like a lion lame with age
i blink behind these white-grey whiskers
at the spear which turned into a hammer
which flattens crowns to cat's ears
and turns the soil to starchy dust
clinging to bathtubs when the kids have gone to bed
a snap
and i am broken
bleeding milk into a little girl's palms
and with a final playful breath
i am become my own offspring
afloat on cooling breezes
towards a long cold winter
by Jo Olluyn
beautiful, grounded.
