The Little Burdock
Sprouted over the mowed grass,
the burdock plants are five inches tall,
and there are thirty of them!
Somewhere, the power of one root-
a heartbeat in the Earth-
to sponsor so many children.
Tough-skinned old grandma Burdock
is sweet here, playful.
A school yard full of children
jump rope and hopscotch.
The baby burdocks greet each other, excited,
each meeting so new,
the Earth hovering under,
discreet as Mom on a park bench,
gearing up for the long haul,
the dance of children on Her broad shoulders.
