Dear Susun,
Thanks for all you do and share. I have been "following" you for about 3 years and have learned a lot about herbs, infusions, vinegars etc. I moved to Italy a few years ago, so I try to read all your newsletters.
I wanted to ask you a question in regards to menstrual cycle. I am 54 and I believe I am entering the menopausal phase. For a couple of years I had frequent menstruation (every 20 - 23 days) lasting the usual 5-6 days. Then the last year has been a little erratic, between 23 and 34 days cycles and the usual 5-6 days of bleeding. December 2011 was what I thought the beginning of the end.
I had my period and then for 64 days NOTHING!!! Yeah, I said, finally menopause (although the thought of being pregnant did cross my mind....I mean, at my age its improbable but not impossible). But to my confusion after 64 days I started bleeding and have been bleeding for 13 days!!! Now, I do feel that it is part of the erratic premenopausal behaviour. My only concern is loss of iron, although I feel strong and not tired.
I wanted to know if there were any herbs to support this process before I seek medical advice, which I know would only turn into hormonal therapy which I just don't want. So, before resorting to MD's I wanted to know if you had any suggestions in the matter which would be immensely appreciated.
Hello,
As you figured out, erratic menstruation as you are describing is not uncommon. Susun recommends daily infusions to help as you move through the changes. These infusions are also powerful sources of minerals. You can also look into using vitex tincture for helping to regulate your cycles if you are moved to try something. Susun recommends a dropperful of tincture in water, 3-4 times a day. Usually takes several months for results. Yellow dock is wonderful for iron... tincture or syrup. Also cooked dandelion leaves, chickweed, molasses, nettles.
Do you have Susun's book New Menopausal Years? If not, I would highly recommend it. Lots of good information to help and you may also want to check out Susun's online course Menopausal Allies, which comes with lessons, resources and Susun's mentorship. We also have a room dedicated to Menopause at our forum.
Just let us know if you need further assistance.
blessings,
Kim
