Hi,
I'm re-reading Susun's menopause book (which I love) and web surfing for answers to post-menopausal issues. My meno has paused -- I'm 53 and haven't had a period in six years.
At this point I am dealing with vaginal atrophy (dryness, inflexibility, pain) -- re-reading Susun's chapter on that. I believe the atrophy is related to a new problem, urethrocele (a prolapse of urethra into my weakened vagina). I'm childless, so don't have the the usual causes of prolapse -- I believe it's related to much lower levels of estrogen. Vaginal prolapses are progressive, I see on the web sites -- many more organs can fall in! -- so I want to fix this early, if possible. Looking for herbal solutions (phyto-estrogenic salves perhaps?), and exercises to strengthen my vaginal walls. The one woman-focused site I've found about prolapse (www.wholewoman.com) states emphatically that Kegels are useless (http://wholewoman.com/blog/?p=118 ) , instead has a ballet-esque routine to sell. Of course, Susun and everyone else recommends Kegels, so I wonder. Another site calls the problem "vaginal hernias," and says no heavy lifting -- but I live alone out in the countryside and am building my own house this summer, heavy-lifting required.
Susun, in your next edition, would love to see expansion of post-menopause issues such as atrophy; the many forms of prolapse; to Kegel or not to Kegel; and yoga to keep the yoni happy.
thanks!
Hi,
Thanks for taking the time to send your suggestions. Yes, Susun recommends the use of kegels. Interesting that the website would rather you buy an exercise program from them as opposed to something you can do for free and that many women have had great success with. But, of course, we are all unique and must decide what works for us. Susun doesn't recommend the use of hormone creams, including the 'natural' ones you find. I've included links to a few of her articles here:
Maybe also red raspberry leaf infusions : "Brewed as a tea or as an infusion, raspberry is the best known, most widely used, and safest of all uterine and pregnancy tonic herbs. It contains fragrine, an alkaloid which gives tone to the muscles of the pelvic region,
including the uterus itself." - Susun Weed
