I have experienced a marked reduction in my immune system since last year and am wondering if menopause can compromise an immune system. I have always prided myself on seldom catching a cold, but that changed last year. This winter is turning out the same. I currently have pneumonia. I recently had my yearly blood work up and everything came up normal. I am a 51 year old non-smoker. Any insight would be appreciated.
Thank You.
Hello and thank you for writing. Menopause does not directly affect your immune system, however it is great change, emptionally, physically, and mentally. And though it is a beautiful magical part of a woman's evolution, this change causes stress, which can definitely make it more difficult for parts of us to function optimally. I encourage you to nourish yourself with immune-strengthening herbs and foods. You can read a wonderful article on this by Susun: http://www.susunweed.com/Article_Strengthen_Your_Immune_System.htm. How are you doing with your pneumonia? The start of the above article mentions how to counter acute infection with echinacea. It may be an aid to you if you choose. Then beyond that, further down in the article, is mention of what daily lifestyle choices you can do to strengthen your immune system. An herb that is specific for nourishing lung health is Mullein. We brew dried mullein leaves as an infusion to be strained and drunk.
We also have a wonderful resource available 24 hours a day. This is our online forum, http://www.herbshealing.com/wisewomanforum.htm, where people from around the world come to share life experiences and questions. If you want further support as you heal through the pneumonia and strengthen your immune system. As well, of course you are always welcome to write.
Blessings,
