Q: Hello,
I'm looking for herbs that are rich in progesterone.
I would prefer using a herbal tea or herbal tinctures to supply extra progesteron as an alternative to progesteron treatment including natural progesteron creams. Are there better alternatives available? I'm certainly low in progesteron.
Look forward to hearing from you.
A: If you are lacking in necessary progesterone production, my approach would be to encourage you to nourish yourself so that you are able to produce this better your self. Perhaps this too is your thinking since you are wanting an alternative to progesterone treatment. There is one herb most well known for this: Vitex, also known as Chaste Tree. The berries, fresh or dried, are made into a tincture, of which a dropperful is take 3-4 times a day, for months, sometimes years. This herb nourishes the endocrine system, responsible for progesterone production. In New Menopausal Years the Wise Woman Way, Susun also writes that Wild Yam (Dioscorea) can promote progesterone: tincture of fresh dried roots, 30 drops daily; or infusion or tea of dried root, 1-3 cups daily.
As women head in to menopause their hormone levels change (as they do throughout one's monthly cycle). Estradiol production ceases, and progesterone production drops. I would wonder when you write that you do not produce enough progesterone, what this is in comparison with. People are unique from each other, as they are unique from themselves at different times of their lives. Progesterone decreases are a natural part of a woman's life, which is why the above two herbs are not recommended once a woman has reached the heart of menopause. :)
Blessings,
Karen Joy
