Q: Dear Susun,
I am 73 years old and because I have been experiencing many symptoms related to hormone imbalance I recently had a saliva hormone test done and the following numbers were revealed:
Estradiol <0.5
Progesterone <15
Ratio PG/E2 30
Testosterone 27
DHEAS <2.5
Cortisol AM 4.4
Cortisol PM 0.2
I am considering taking bioidentical hormone replacement therapy from a local compounding pharmacy but would very much appreciate your input on this therapy. It appears to be a logical remedy but I don't know if it is wishful thinking. I have also had a history of thyroid probpems but am not currently on any medication as my T3 andT4 blood test are in the normal range.
The symptoms I am most concerned about is fatique and the loss of my hair and brittle nails. Any herbal suggestion, either topical of internal, for this problem? I would appreciate any help you could give me.
Thank you very much.
J.
A: Hello J., as a long time student of Susun's, studying the magic of women's cycles, herbal wisdom, and the Wise Woman approach to health, I have never had occasion to learn the measurements of hormones. Each woman is unique and so is each moment of our fluctuations. While numbers can be helpful at times, they can be very limiting. I hear your concerns of thyroid health, brittle nails, hair loss, and fatigue. I can offer some articles written by Susun on how best to nourish ourselves to help remedy these. The hormone treatment you refer to focuses more on replacing natural function rather than enhancing it. I much prefer the latter, as I believe does Susun, unless no other option is available, and the replacing does less harm to the health than letting it be.
