Q: Dear Ms. Susun,
I am from India.
I wish if you could guide me. This is regarding my wife who has entered menopause about 8 yrs back. She is fairly fit in health and is very concious of herself. She does not have any heart prob, diabetes except high BP which is very marginal.
She has been consuming Shelcal-500 mg supplement every day as a manual calcium supplement for last 3-4 years.
The one thing is that she gets some neuro problems such as twitching of nerves in legs and hands and she gets some vertigo on head movement etc occassionally.
I want to know what are the Vitamin supplements that are required for ladies after menopause. As, I know, Calcium is one which she is already taking in 500 mg quantity everyday. What more is required for her to control her neuro problems ?
I hope, your expertise would enlighten me in this aspect !
Thanks and Regards,
V.
A: Hello V., I help with Susun's correspondence, since she is quite busy and is rarely able to answer emails. She does offer free phone consultations, but I imagine your distance makes this time and cost prohibitive.
I hear your concern for your wife's health; your main concern being the hand and leg twitching and vertigo. You also ask what vitamin supplements are required for women after menopause. The answer here could easily be none, since what is required for anyone is wholesome nutritious food, same for any stage of life. In a lesser diet, one may need extra focus on certain foods at certain times, and perhaps this is what you are referring to. There are a couple articles written by Susun which may offer you both some of the answers you look for; they can be found on her menopause website:
Post-Menopausal Years Nourishment
Regarding what you feel are neurological concerns, I am not in a place to be able to judge what is causing this or what may help. Perhaps more local diagnosis could at least help you know what you and your wife are dealing with first. These are not common reflections of menopause that I am familiar with. Of course any of the nourishing suggestions mentioned above have the possibility to help, though it may be important to find the cause sooner than later to be sure stronger intervention is not needed.
We have an online forum for women and men around the world where you and/or your wife are welcome to post these concerns asking the experience and thoughts of others.
Wishing you both the best! Let me know if I can help any further.
Blessings,
Karen Joy
