Peoples medicine

You may lose your job and your health insurance, but the medicines of the earth will never abandon you. Green blessings are always waiting for us to recognize them and utilize them. Look at my course offerings, and you’ll see an interesting change over the past five years. I used to offer one class a year called “Hands-On Herbal Medicine,” where we made infusions, tinctures, vinegars, ointments, and herbal honeys. Now, almost a third of my classes are Hands-On classes. I see how much confidence my students gain when we go out together to identify, pick, prepare and use the plants that grow around them. We make salads and soups; we dry herbs; we get our hands on the plants and listen to them.

Herbal medicine is people’s medicine. It always has been, and always will be. The World Health Organization says that 90 percent of all heath care is done by women in their own homes using simple herbal remedies. Many modern westernized cultures rely on drugs and are suspicious of herbal medicines. While drugs and surgery can be miraculous, I don’t think anyone would disagree that they are overused.

It bothers me when people said that I do “alternative” medicine. Herbs are not alternative; they are traditional. Herbal medicine is traditional medicine. Simple herbal remedies are safe and effective primary medicines and excellent complementary medicines when we must choose drugs or surgery.

Used to counter coughs and improve digestion.

* Harvest vibrant green plantain leaves at any time of their growth.
* Chop them finely and fill a jar with the fresh chopped leaves.
* Slowly pour honey over the leaves.
* Stir it a bit with a chop stick and add more honey.
* Let it sit overnight and add more honey until it is really full.
* Wipe the jar. Label.

You can begin to use it in a few weeks, but optimum strength is achieved in six weeks.

Starting an herbal business

I'm so happy to have found your work online. I actually was recommended your books by Karen Rose, who owns an apothecary near my apartment in Brooklyn. Long story short, it is my intention to one day open my own apothecary that focuses on women's health and wellness. I've been really cultivating my interest in herbalism and plant based healing over the past couple of years and I'm just so in love with everything I'm learning about. I was hoping to get some advice from you regarding the business, where to begin, how to become more involved with the herbalist community, etc etc. I'd love to speak to you personally, if at all possible.
Do you have a brick and mortar location or are you strictly online? Maybe I could take the train out to Woodstock! That would be awesome, the city is making me so sad lately. Too much concrete! Let me know if a meet-up would be something that might interest you. You seem like a very wise woman. :)

Many thanks for writing in! Susun does not have a brick and mortar store – Susun never sells herbs, herbal preparations, etc. Her focus is strictly on teaching… so I’m afraid she would not be of any help in regards to the business end of things or how to go about starting a business… We do have an online forum and there are professional herbalists that post there and some make and sell items – they might be able to offer some guidance if you want to check it out:  www.healingwiseforum.com
