Dear Susun,
I'm rather new to herbalism and am amazed at the potential this body of knowledge has to change my life. Recently, I came across some information on the use of Bentonite clay to remove impurities, either by bathing, or by ingestion. One site I visited suggested that one should be careful about the latter, since some clays contain aluminum which might be toxic. Another site actually had recipes for cooking with the clay!
What is your advice about using Bentonite clay? Is it generally safe? How do you recommend using it to get the benefits of toxin removal?
Hello,
A number of herbalists do use bentonite clay internally - usually as part of a cleansing program. This is something that falls right into the heroic tradition of herbal medicine as opposed to the Wise Woman Tradition that Susun teaches. Instead of focusing on cleansing the body of "toxins" we prefer to nourish and build up the body with food and herbs, usually used in a whole form rather than broken down into capsules, etc.
I've enclosed some thoughts from Susun in regards to the heart of what the Wise Woman Tradition is and how to use it in approaching optimal health.
Thanks for writing and let us know if you need any further assistance.
blessings,
Kim

I guess I can see why taking such a substance internally might be classified as "heroic." I look forward to studying this further using the links you provided.
Hi,
It is a learning process as even within the herbal community, Susun's teachings are of a different nature than many others. Cleansing, detoxing, etc. are ideas that come about from thinking of our body as dirty. Doesn't it seem like a more life-affirming idea to embrace our body and its functions as wonderful just the way they are - to honor the cycles and our connection to the earth.
Granted we do live in a contaminated world, but it will almost always be easier on ourselves to nourish slowly with whole foods and using herbs in a synergistic way. You certainly do not have to take it to the level that Susun does and different circumstances can call for certain things. If you are just starting out, I would recommend reading the articles online, subscribing to the monthly ezine and also checking out our very active forum.
best of luck to you,
Kim
