Hi Susan,
Firstly, I'm so excited to write you as you've become such an inspiration in my life! We have a little permaculture farm here in Northern California and have been expanding our healing apothecary gardens each year. I'm writing because I've been struggling for a few years now with hormonal balance and am reaching out for any and all information and help you'd be willing to share. My husband and I are wanting to try to get pregnant in the next few months and want to try and be the healthiest me I can be for this! I just finished your Child Baring Year book and got so much from it.
I'm almost 30 and had been on birth control since I was 15 and got off of it 4 years ago. Since getting off, I gained 40 pounds, testosterone levels are high, had trouble regulating my period and have thinning hair and flair ups of slight acne on my back. Western medicine claims I have PCOS and non alcohol related fatty liver. Since I'm not used to having the extra weight, I've been having lower back problems and migraines.
I've been researching and thought I'd try making some yellow dock tinctures and Vinagers, reshi mushroom tea, ive been making nettle and red raspberry and red clover tea daily for a couple weeks now.... Do you any more good suggestions? I'm concerned about about my high testosterone and more so, that we will be able to conceive and grow a healthy/happy baby and mommy.
Thank you so so much for all you are and do and any advice you're willing to share.
Blessings,
-Ilanna
Hello Ilanna,
First I will recommend that you pick up a copy of Susun's book. She has a whole chapter of options and information on dealing with PCOS. You can find a copy here:
Here is what the Help! box says:
Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome:
Expect results within 2-4 months
- Remove vegetable/seed oils from your diet. Eat more animal fats (at every meal).
- Take 2-4 dropperful of vitex or saw palmetto tincture daily.
- Take dandelion tincture as needed.
- Control bleeding with frequent doses of shepherd's purse tincture.
- Drink 3-6 quarts of nourishing herbal infusion (NOT TEA!) weekly.
More on Infusions here:
These suggestions will help with all the symptoms you are experiencing. There is a lot more detailed information in Susun's book.
Thank you for writing and please let me know if you have any more questions.
blessings,
Kim
