Hi, my name is Teresa. I have been an herbalist for the past decade. This year I was looking at my poke plant, and was she beautiful. I make tincture out of the root but thought why not out of the berries? I have an acupuncture practice also, and many of my patients are weiry of not biting the seeds of the berries. So I tinctured the berries. So far my patients report their arthritus is much better and there spirits have improved.
I am posting this so I can see if anyone else has tinctured the berries.
Thank you
Teresa Berger Dip. LAc. M.S.

Hi...I have not tinctured the berries, only the root. With the berries, I either eat them fresh off the plant, or dry them and eat them when the mood strikes. I cant see any reason why you would not experiment with tincturing the berries, and testing on yourself...using your intuition and asking the plant, of course, to find the answer to your question...

I had been wanting to dye my hair with poke berries and now that I read that they are and can be eaten I will deffinately try one. What do you think about using poke berries as a hair dye?

Years ago, while raising my children and serving as local wisewoman for my home town, I use to strain the juice from the ripe berries rinse 100PF vodka through the strainer as preservative bottle and refridgerate the juice. I'd give it by the spoonful when the children started coming down with anything throat oriented. Echinacea was another favorite. I reserved poke root tincture for deeper show of signs.

Hey, I recently added a news widget from http://www.widgetmate.com to my blog. It shows the latest news, and just took a copy and paste to implement. Might interest you too.

Poke leaves, root and berries are excellent for health. Collect the berries from the plant and plant these in good alkaline soil made from composting leaves with good dirt etc. Boil leaves in water till tender and save the water in the refrigerater. Eat the leaves as you would greens. Daily drink the liguid starting with a teaspoon and building up to one to two ounces daily. When leaves are not present dig the root and after cleaning boil the root for three hours and put the juice in the refrigerator. Drink as above for many illnesses including neoplasms especilly arthritis.

Yes, Pokeberry powder is good for many ailments. I've powdered and made the caps of the Pokeberry. One old woman's formula long ago on the records was one berry a day for a week or two in the Spring for general health. Strong stuff. It is. - Martin

I'm confused! I read where poke berries and the leaves are poisonious! What I read even said not to wear clothes dyed with the berries! Which I have just dyed a blouse that turned out just beautiful! Here I am reading that they can be eaten and used in many forms! What gives? What am I to believe? HELP!

Lillian: After reading this blog and many others on pokeberries, I decided to try just two, swallowed whole like pills so that the seeds could simply pass through my system. In less than an hour, I noticed a significant decrease in pain from a trauma-induced arthritic knee. Since then I've gradually increased my daily dosage to past the limits discussed in the articles. I'm still here and so far so good. So I experimented with my own body and I'm happy, but (legal disclaimer) I am NOT recommending anyone else do the same with theirs. The entire plant IS poisonous. Everyone's on their own.

I have always been told swallow the berries and do not break the seeds.

Can the berries or root be used to make a treatment for ringworm or mites? Our dog has something on her hip, round patch with hair gone; rash around edges, skin in middle slightly 'lumpy' - puts me in mind of ring worm, but my mom said it could be mange.

I am in the process of experimenting with poke berries. My yard is loaded with them. They seem to be a powerful cleanser. When combined with heat watch out. I have eaten as many as 30 berries at a pop. Besides having a warming effect, they tend to cause a scratchy throat. If the berries are pressed and the juice is drunk without the seeds and skin, it is much easier to handle. If you are looking for a cheap diet aid, poke will dramatically suppress the appetite.

Directed toward Janet?/Dog with round patch?
Suggestions-
Organic Apple Cider Vinegar-straight or half/half with H2O.. applying to rash/patch..do NOT rinse off. Harmless to pet, if they lick.
Also, pour about a capful on nap of neck, to aid in same, and helps pests leave animal.
If truly mange, and outbreak is fierce, MuleTeam Borax/Periode mix, applied to a wet pet, allow to stay on animal. No harm to pet, and yet, aids to body situation quickly.

i tend to stay away from herbs in the power line trails as well alongside roads and railroads. these areas are usually sprayed heavily. we lived in north carolina, in madison county, and knew them to spray quite heavily.
as for the poke berries, i never used them while there, i found this site:

From what I am reading you can eat the berry but not the seed. Is this correct? Can Jelly be made from the berry?
