Relieving Arthritic Pain

Q: Greetings,

I am dealing with arthritis a medical doctor diagnosed my case as "early" arthritis.  It doesn't feel like early but anyway it's mostly in the knees.  The right one used to be swollen.  To my surprise the swelling does not seem to be  there anymore.  The area seems to be a toughened where it was formerly tender.
I think they called it bursitis at that stage.  I had some heat therapy, and ultra sound.

What remains is this inability to navigate areas that have steps or where the ground is uneven -the knees hurt and I even hear some cracking sounds.  I've taken a pretty full range of herbal remedies including red clover, nettles, burdock root tinctures devils claw. Is there anything else you can recommend.

I've taken glucosamine and msm, flax seed oil, and am now taking fish oil (Carson's)., I stay away from alcoholic beverages, am vegetarian have done juice therapy.  I also take SAM-e.  Anything else you can recommend. It would be most appreciated.

A: I recommend you first read this article on fibromyalgia.   Though I know this is not your label, many of the ideas may help, as well as some of the ideas in this article on bone health. I encourage you to just pick 2-3 or three actions to try and give yourself a time, like 4 months of working with those solidly.

Often we hear a list of "remedies" and throw them at ourselves haphazardly and then write them off as ineffectual.  So even if you feel drawn again toward something you have already tried, you may wish to try again, noting the form of the herb and more specific details about how much how often, etc.  I am unsure how good for us flax oil is, though I have heard wonderful things about the freshly ground seeds baked in products.

Healing Fibroids and Hyperplasia with Wise Woman Ways

Q: Hello…

While reading Susun’s book New Menopausal Years I saw mentioned the impending release of a book entitled Down There: The Wise Woman Way that is said to deal with the issues of ovarian cysts and hyperplasia. Since I’m currently having issues with both I was wondering if the book is still going to be released. I’m 56 and in menopause. I have incidents of bleeding/spotting and was told my endometrial lining was thick. I had a D&C which showed the tissue to be benign but it has grown back to its original thickness in two-month time and the spotting and bleeding continue. I have a history of fibroids as well and am now told (after a pelvic ultrasound) that there is also a small cyst on my left ovary. Naturally, the doctor wants to do a hysterectomy claiming that is the only way the bleeding will cease and I can eliminate the possibility of any cancer forming. After doing some research, I discovered that the problem may be due to my years on birth control pills (Ortho Novum 777) which cites endometrial hyperplasia as a side effect, nothing I was ever told. I DO NOT want a hysterectomy and am praying and looking into alternative approaches for my problem. Any suggestion, reading materials, physicians who have dealt with this problem, would be so appreciated.

Barheartflowr_12

A: Hello, thank you for writing.

Susun is currently working on Down There, simply taking longer than she originally planned - it is coming along wonderfully!!

Here are some of Susun's thoughts on ovarian cysts:

Here is a link to a previous answer Susun gave to another woman with ovarian cyst concern. Her recommendation:

Try chickweed tincture, a dropperful four times a day. Continue for as long as it takes. I have known several women dissolve very large ovarian cysts this way. If you want it to go away faster, you could also use castor oil packs.

And here she writes more about Chickweed...

Chickweed (Stellaria media) has secret dissolving powers. Ovarian cysts, dermoid cysts, lumps in the breast and elsewhere can't hold their own against her slippery ways when a dropperful (1 ml) is taken 4-5 times a day, persistently, for many months. And have you tried chickweed pesto? It vibrates with antioxidant power!

How long has it been since you last bled?  Fibroids can grow through menopause though disappear shortly after.

I suppose cutting out organs can eliminate chance of getting cancer there, but this seems  a drastic way to ensure this to me.  We all have our levels of what is comfortable though.  And I trust a woman to know what is best for her.

The explanations I have read for hyperplasia seem to think it is possibly from excessive estrogen unchecked by progesterone.  Estrogen levels will decrease, as long as you don't take hrt, as you go through menopause.  As well, Vitex berry tincture, as described in New Menopausal Years the Wise Woman Way, can help one produce more progesterone if needed.

Do let me know if I can help further.

Alleviating Arthritis Pain

Q: Dear Wise Woman:

Can you suggest any teas or tinctures for relief from arthritis pain?

Thanks.

Barheartflowr_12

A: It is possible that regular nourishing infusions can help alleviate arthritis.  Nettle leaf especially, or Oatstraw if related to lack of quality sleep.  A top herb for arthritis I have heard is Poke.  You can read in "Poke-ing Around in the Garden":

In Appalachian folk medicine, the berries are swallowed as a treatment for arthritis and for immune stimulation -- one berry (either fresh or dried) is the equivalent of one drop of root tincture.

You might also enjoy this article about ayurveda for arthritis.

We are all unique so our solutions would be so.  I am happy to talk with your further if you wish.

Healing Uterine Fibroids

Q: Hello Susun, I am so sorry that I've missed your community free phone consultation on health issues.  I have only just found out and read about your availability on a Tuesday night.  I guess I have missed for the rest of the year and not going to get to ask you on Tuesday until next Spring around April.  I was hoping maybe you will be kind enough to check this email and perhaps somehow will return email to me.

I have been suffering with large uterine fibroids for a long time.  I have been trying to treat these multiple fibroids with herbal medicine.  I read several books and also ask herbalist to give me herbs to brew it into a tea to drink everyday.  However, my fibroids still gets bigger, the biggest one now is 7.9cm, some 6cm, etc.  I'll tell you my formula that I go on and if you will ever want to respond and want to email me back with your ideas, I will be so greatful.

Formula:
White Pond Lily
Bittersweet
Gr Celandine
Vitex
Raspberry
Bladderwrack
Dong Quai
Box
Oregan Grape
Pansy
Wild Yam

I drink a litre of this tea a day.  My bleeding has stopped from this formula but the fibroids still get larger.  Don't know why?

Barheartflowr_12

A: Hello, thank you for writing.  I know you wish to speak to Susun.  She gets dozens of emails every day, yet does not have internet to be able to correspond through email.  She has entrusted Justine and myself to answer these.  I will help any way I am able.

I know for any concern there are so many different suggestions on what you can do.  When feeling desperate too we often then just mix them in a jumble and try them all, or a good majority of them!  Susun, and I, like to teach simplicity.  Try one or two herbs a time.  Give them time to develop a relationship with yourself.

Cecilia, what age are you?  Might you be going into menopause?  Might this be why your bleeding has stopped? - by bleeding are you meaning your menstrual cycles?  If entering menopause, know that during this time fibroids grow for many women, yet disappear post menopause.  Are the fibroids causing pain, unhealthy bleeding, or obstructing the healthy functioning of any of your organs?

Here you can read Susun's article, Help for Women with Uterine Fibroids.  It is just another voice among all that you have heard.  I DO encourage you to find something to work with for some time, time dependent on any possible health threats you are facing.  If you wish to make use of some of her suggestions and would like support or further clarification, please do let me know.  I am very happy to help!

Blessings,

Q: Dear Karen, You have no idea how greatful I am to receive your email.  This is more than what I can expect from someone with whom I've never met.

I am 40 years old and I have checked with the doctor by doing some blood test and it's safe to say that I am not about to go into menopause right away.

I was bleeding in between my periods during last December, it's rather like I was bleeding 23 days out of 30 days in the month.  Although the in between period bleeding or spotting was not heavy, I was scarred to death and worry sick about the direction I was forced into.  Out of desperation, I try the herbal medicine formula that I read from a book which has Susun's name on it as well as consulting a local herbalist to put together this formula.  This formula was able to stop the bleeding between periods right away, but my recent pelvic and transvaginal ultrasound had shown that  all my multiple fibroids had grown by more than 1 cm in size.

I will definitely read up on what Susun had written up on the link you've sent me on fibroids.  God knows I need to learn more.  Maybe you are right, one or two herbs might very well be a good approach.  If you will be also kind enough to email me what you might suggest of a particular herb or herbs, in a tea or tincture format, I'll be glad to try them out.

I've just found out about Susun from looking her name up on the internet.

By the way, is fibroid possible to shrink at all?  I know it is extremely hard to treat.  If my fibroid is to grow in the direction that it's going, I'm sure that I'll be checking into the ER real soon.  If you know what I mean.....

Pls let me know your thoughts......

Barheartflowr_12

A: I do hear your concern.  I have questions...

Did the odd bleeding start suddenly last December?  What was your cycle like before that?  Has it continued since?

Do you remember what book you got the formula from?   She rarely recommends formulas (you can read about her preference for Simples), and I know of none like the one you describe in your e-mail.

What direction at that point in December did you feel you were forced into?

How recent was your ultrasound?  How long before that was the last?  For many fibroids?  Where?

I am glad you will read the article!!  You will see there are more recommendations than just the herbs.  I encourage you to explore even the mundane, like exercise and diet ideas.  I like people to read the ideas and see what they are drawn too.  That tells me more about what may be right for them.

I do not know what you mean by "checking into the ER real soon" - could you elaborate please?

love and blessings,
Karen Joy

Q: Hello Karen, Due to work reason I've been away, I am going to be away as well during this coming week from Nov 26 to Dec 1.  The book that mentions Susun is called Alternative Medicien Guide Women's Health Series Bk 1 by Burton Goldberg. She is mentioned in the chapter on fibroids.  IN there, Susun is documented for some herbs for stopping fibroid bleeding.  Susun sounds very renowned.

My fibroids is located everywhere.  I can email you my most recent pelvic and transvaginal ultrasound if you like in a week.  That might give you in greater detail where exactly my fibroids are.  I have about nine of them of all kinds of sizes ranging from 3cm to the largest on 7.9cm.  No mass is shown in the fluid.  I guess that is good at least there is no malignancy.  Pls let me know what info you would like me to provide you with.

Pls allow me to thank you here for the time you have taken for reading through my email and caring enough to answer me about my fibroids.  If you would like to continue to help me seek out whether there is still something I can do to shrink my fibroids, it would be wonderful.

Just to let you know I am not entering my menopause, I've done blood test to check on my hormone level and it's not menopause.  My only trouble is that these fibroids keep on growing larger by about one cm per year, that is why I feel so desperate.  My anxiety comes strictly from the ever growing bigger fibroids and there is not any other hidden issues.  I shall look forward to hearing what you or Susun's thoughts are if there is anything one can do to shrink them.  Thx a million for now.

Barheartflowr_12

A: I am unfamiliar with that book.  Yes, Susun does offer some different ideas, though rarely does she suggest they all be combined in one formula.  Did you read the article on Fibroids from her that I sent?  What appealed to you?  As I said this will help me know how to support you better, to hear what you felt drawn to or curious about.

Fibroids can shrink.  You have a lot.  I encourage you to nourish your overall reproductive health.

I understand fibroids to be solid masses, not fluid.  Did I understand you correctly?  No need to send the images, since I can know as much or more from hearing your description.  I hear the fear in your language.  I still suggest you start small... so please do tell me what appeals from the article I sent :)

Blessings,
Karen Joy

Q: Hello Karen, It's been a while since we last wrote to each other.  I've been away for two weeks and then got back a week ago and life has been crazy.

I have read the article from Susun the moment you sent to me which was about almost two months ago.  The article appealed to me in a number of ways.  I agree with the wholistic and integrative approach.  The body cannot be treated as an isolation part.  One needs to take care of the body from inside out, medically and spirtually.  I am not sure if I have blocked up or undissolve anger from the inside that is causing the fibroid growth in the uterus.  I try not to hold on to the past and over the last six years I try to let go the past if there was anything unhappy in my life that is bothering me.

I am already eating whole grains most of the time.  I try to stay on millet, brown rice and brown rice pasta, black rice, kumut bread, no dairy, very limited soy product food as I know it is higher in estrogen, some beans in my diet, and when I do eat meat I try to stay with fish and organic turkey or chicken, some lambs too.

I must look into the fact that she mentioned Red Clover flowers for helping with fibroids, also from time to time I already go on a liver cleanse because I put myself on livery strenghten supplements like dandelion and milk thistle capsules.  I haven't looked into yellow dock root yet but I will look into that soon.

I guess what I look for is what you and Susun will think for someone with nine fibroids in various sizes, what one can do solidly and more aggressively to dissolve them herbally.  I already know my surgical options and I am not finding any of the available procedures very attractive and I don't want to go there until I am in an emergency situation.  Is there something Susun can suggest if I were her patient for me to take to start the process of dissolving it.  Or is it treatable altogether?

Thanks once again.  Sincerely hope that I will hear from you

Barheartflowr_12

A: I am glad you read the article.  I know you wish to hear specifically from Susun.  You will have to wait until spring.

Until then perhaps you wish to diligently try one or more of: Vitex tincture, vigorous exercise, poke or castor oil packs.

I know she would not feel your liver needs cleansing, but support with the herbal tincture you mentioned would be wonderful! Until you diligently work in this way for at least 6 month to a year, we can not know if this is treatable.  Meanwhile I trust you to know when and if the fibroids pose danger.... again I refer to you comment of it being fluid filled.   Remember from the article "Uterine fibroids are solid muscle tissue growths in the uterus" - are you sure these are fibroids?.

Lineballs_3

Q: Hello Karen, Just want to double check with you what exactly is poke or castor oil packs?  I know what Vitex tincture is as I have used it in tincture form.  I cannot agree with more about keeping the liver cleansed and therefore making it more possible to treat the fibroids since the liver will be functioning more properly.

Pls explain to me what poke and or castor oil packs do for you.

Hope you are having a safe and wonderful holiday in the meantime.

Barheartflowr_12

A: I was referring to the mention of these in the article already linked to.  The Poke is a tincture of the root, and/or oil of the root as a belly rub externally - both explained in the article.

Castor oil packs can be done various ways, however you do it, it is the warmed oil applied and let sit.  I would soak flannel in the oil already warmed over a low heat (warm not hot) and cover, or you can soak flannel in the oil, place on belly, cover with protective material if you wish, and place a hot water bottle over top.

lots of love,

Karen Joy

Lineballs_3

Q: Hello Karen, Thanks for your advice.  I was the person with the big fibroids.  I have taken your advice and started the Poke tincture.

Just want to ask you about the flannel.  You mentioned to soak the flannel in the hot or warm oil, how long should you soak the flannel in the oil for?  Do you apply the flannel soaked oil directly on the belly?
Anything, do you happen to know when Susun will start her phone consultation this Spring?  I know that she does telephone consulting over the phone sometime in the Spring and finishes April in the evening hours on one weekday per week.  Can you possibly let me know when she starts that, maybe I can call her and speak with her directly about my problem, if you would be so kindly to let me know if it's possible to call her.

Barheartflowr_12

A: Yes let the oil soaked flannel sit directly in the abdomen.  It is the warmed oil that is doing the good, the flannel is just a vehicle to hold it in place.  Soak as long as you wish, or find a varied way to get the oil on.

I do not know the exact date Susun will resume yet.  It is Tuesday evenings from 7:30pm to 9:30pm Eastern time, and usually starts late March or early April.  Her number is 845-246-8081.

All our best!

Serious Sweet Tooth

Q: Dear Karen

I receive my books today.  I am so excited I can't wait to start reading.  I was also happy and surprise that Susun sign all the books in my favorite color purple.  Thanks a bunch! oh one more thing I have a serious sweet tooth and I have to stop craving bad sugar. Any suggestions? Thanks again.

Many Blessings

Barheartflowr_12

A: Hello!  So wonderful... I will let Susun know you are pleased.

It is my feeling that all our cravings have a wonderful healthy source. Cravings for sweet are very basic and very healthy in my opinion.  I have found two sources of these.  For some it is from a need for protein.  For others a craving for sweet is a very basic craving for life and/or comfort.  Our first food is sweet, milk, as are our next, usually grains.  Of course in the face of so many refined sugars these no longer seem sweet to us.  Regardless I think our craving for sweet is our need for the nutrition that grains can provide.

With any craving, there can always be mental/emotional aspects to explore. In addition though I believe all cravings are directly connected with our innate wisdom and connection with our deep needs.  The trick I suppose is to find how to connect the craving with the food, or other thing, that satisfies it truly.

How to Use Herbs Effectively: Navigating the Terrain of Various Opinions

Q:  Hi,

I just signed up for your newsletter and find it informative.  I have a question that I've wanted to ask.

I've researched various herbs that boost one's immune system like astragalus, olive leaf, medicinal mushrooms, etc.  There are different approaches regarding using/combining these herbs.  Many say it's wise to alternate them.  One article mentioned using olive leaf for 2 weeks, then mushrooms for 2 weeks, then back to olive leaf.  Other articles say just stick to one and take it daily.  Because the body treats herbs, basically, like food, there isn't a need to alternate using different ones.  Some of the mushroom products, like Host Defense by New Chapter, synergistically combines 16 medicinal mushrooms and recommend taking it daily.

What is your objective opinion about this?  Does one's body need a "break" from taking certain herbs?  Does one's body get "use to" a herb making it less effective?  Is it better to alternate different ones or just stick to one daily like other supplements?

Your feedback is appreciated - thanks.

Barheartflowr_12

A:  Thank you for writing.  Yes there are varying opinions on this.  From my years of study with Susun Weed, I gather that she does not see a need to take breaks from herbs in general, however have heard her mention the strength of some herbs warrant they be used for weeks or a month, then discontinued for a longer period of time.  Or I have heard her mention the use of an herb or two that is taken only during a particular phase of a woman's cycle.  I have also heard her mention, like when referring to asparagus, the value of paying attention to a food's availability in a season.

I personally find it a variable that needs attention to the person and the herb and the situation.  I do not generally subscribe to the one day or week or so on, then one off.  However I have found for myself similar variations.  I encourage you to gather up the varying opinions, organizing them by the value of the source to you, then experiment for yourself and see what feels right with any herb at any given time.

Please let us know if we can help further!

Lifestyle Challenges: Food Allergies, Depression, Pains

Q:  Hi Susun,

I want to thank you for taking time to read this email and I am in hopes you can help me find an answer to my question. A woman I work with says she has an allergy to celery and of course most folks would say, well...just stay away from celery...which would of course be smart. The thing is, is that she's a cashier for a major grocery store. She was explaining to me that when she handles celery when it comes through her check out stand, her throat begins to close up and she has trouble breathing, expecially with the leafy green part. Might you have any idea of anything she might be able to do to prepare her body ahead of time to counteract the effects of the celery? I was just wondering and would like to be able to help her out. It distresses me just a little to see so many people go running to the doctors office when ever the slightest ill goes on with them. People seem so dependent on Doctors...doctors are God's to these folks.

Too, there's a very nice lady who, though very strong and independent, has depression issues and this last November she went to see the doctor and they put her on about 2 or 3 different kinds of meds for depression and a short time later she began having constant pains in her baby making parts. She's at the right age for the change of life, but I was wondering if the meds might have kick started the trouble in her uterus where it might not been an issue with her at all otherwise? Now they're telling her she's going to have to have her uterus removed and all the while I can't help but wonder if this can be avoided all together.

Any suggestions? I'd appreciate any input you have, thanks so much~

Barheartflowr_11

A:  Thank you for writing.  For allergies, I have heard Susun often recommend Nettle leaf infusions to help strengthen the adrenals, and therefore our ability to handle the challenges of life.  Beyond that I would consider options through her employer, changing jobs, and exploring how much of the reaction from handling can be worked with mentally, say through hypnosis.  If at one time we ingest something and have an unexpected adverse, or even scary, reaction to it, it is natural that we respond again that way when seeing the item or handling it, more from the memory of the trauma still held in our body.

For the woman who chose to do those medicines, first please empower her to research and make choices based on knowledge.  She has pain, this in itself does not warrant removal of a part of her body.  Perhaps there are more details to what she has found in regards to her pain that you don't now.  Otherwise, I would consider new doctors.

Blessings,
Karen Joy

Herbal First Aid Kit

Q:  Hi Susun:

Thank you for your words. I read you whenever I feel deflated and uninspired as a wise woman.
I am taking my 5 year old girl and I to Asia in February next year. We will be in S-E Asia and hopefully Nepal and India.

I have travelled for years but I have only ever had a "chemical" first aid kit. I would like to put together a herbal one to take.

Would you be able to help me here? Perhaps you have a list or a direct link to something on your site?

I would really appreciate any help you can give.

Barheartflowr_2

A:  It is wonderful to hear how you enjoy Susun's work.  We will be sure to share your words with her.  Susun teaches a class every year about making your own herbal first aid kit.  I took this many years back and found it wonderful.  I cannot remember all that she taught to be in her kit, but I am happy to share what is in mine, which is likely very similar.  I do not know of a specific article she wrote on this, though I believe she is or has written on this in her regular SageWoman articles.  Do let me know if I can help.

Blessings,

Karen Joy

Lineballs_3

Q:  Hi

Thanks for writing back.  I would love to know what you put in your kit.  Do you also have labels for their use in different situations?  I will also research on the web.

Look forward to hearing from you.

Barheartflowr_4

A:  My herbal first aid kit that I take with me when I travel has:

Tinctures of...
~Echinacea Root
~Dandelion Root
~Yarrow flowering tops (kept in a spray bottle to use in throat or topically as well as internally)
~Hypericum flowering tops
~Poke root
~Osha root
~Skullcap flowering tops
~Wormwood flowering tops

Oil of...
~Comfrey root or Calendula flower
~Hypericum flowering tops

I used to keep a paper with suggested uses of each and amount to use but now know it well enough.  I still practice a trick I learned from Susun - only fill bottles half full of the tinctures that are used in tiny amounts - Poke, Osha, Wormwood.

Lots of love,

Karen Joy

Genital Herpes

Dear Susan,

Q: Thank you for the newsletter. Love all your stuff and have been following you for years. Question: I have a friend who has recently broken out terribly, for the first time with genital herpes. Her MD is recommending she remain on anti-virals for the rest of her life. Meaning taking Valtrex every day. Do you suggest another method of dealing with this?

Thank you.

The image “http://www.wisewomantradition.com/healingwise/images/barheartflowr.gif” cannot be displayed, because it contains errors.

A: Hello, thank you for writing.  We are so glad you enjoy Susun's work, and will be sure to share your words with her. She does not have internet to be able to correspond through email.

I do not know any reason to live on a drug for life for genital herpes.  Is there something more to the situation than what most people get, prompting the doctor to suggest this?

The first breakout is usually the worse.  Yes, it is viral.  It lives in the nerves and comes out when stressed.  More people have it than most of us realize.  Many learn to live with it.  In fact some use it as a wonderful barometer, alerting us to sexual, physical, emotional stress we may have been ignoring.  It also can react to the simple stress of wearing pants too tight, or not allowing the free circulation of air.  Some find they have a breakout when feeling sexual guilt....  Anyway, subsequent breakouts are usually a lot less severe than the first.  Many go years without a breakout.  Compare this to any detrimental effects of the antiviral, I personally would opt out.

Rosemary Gladstar has a wonderful section in her Family Herbal for those with herpes viruses.  She writes about what can bring on an outbreak, how to prevent an outbreak more naturally and herbs to help relieve one already happening.  I personally have only needed one wonderful herb, an antiviral, Hypericum.  The tincture I take while having an outbreak or if I feel one coming, and the oil I put on topically.  Both are made from the fresh flowering tops of Hypericum perforatum, called

St.   John's Wort or St. Joan's Wort. Though in my over 10 years working with herbs I have only needed this about 3 times (and was glad too for the chance to experiment on myself).  I have also recently discovered chocolate seeming to encourage a breakout once, though not each time, thank goodness :)

Here is a bit Susun writes from the November 2001 Newsletter :

"Hypericum perforatum, also known as St Joans (Johns) wort is the herb I choose when herpes is the problem. The oil of the fresh flowers rubbed on the places where the sores appear can prevent them from coming out. Frequent applications is the key. Really frequent, like every 10-15 minutes if you can do it.

The tincture of the fresh flowers can be used to kill the virus. A dose is a dropperful, taken as frequently as every two hours if an outbreak seems close. I have seen this one-two punch get rid of shingles, which is a severe form of herpes, but it must be used at the time of the outbreak.

To get behind the scenes, you will need to use other herbs inbetween times. Recipes and suggestions for these can be found in either of my books
Breast Cancer? Breast Health! the Wise Woman Way or Healing Wise. "

Blessings,

Karen Joy

Plant Estrogens and Cancer

Q: I am so confused. I thought that estrogen, not progesterone was the main culprit in midlife cancers in woman. I had also heard that soy, being a plant based estrogen was also under scrutiny. I have cautioned my daughters about getting too caught up in the soy milk/everything craze until we know more about that. I have hoped that our bodies see the plant based estrogens as friendly , but I have heard different opinions. Clarify , please?  Thanks

Barheartflowr_3

A: Hello, thank you for writing.  I understand your confusion. Phytoestrogens are made in plants and similar to our estrogens but not the same, as are xenoestrogens, found increasingly in our environment primarily from plastics.  First, yes, one estrogen, estradiol is implicated in increased likelihood of cancer.  This is only one of many estrogens, one we produce from menarche to menopause, but wisely stop producing after menopause.  It is my understanding at the moment that phytoestrogens actually protect us from this potential harm of estradiol. You can read more in Susun's article Phytoestrogens: Friend or Foe? I have heard enough conflicting ideas to keep my eyes open, however considering that phytoestrogens are in so many plants, including beans and grains, I find it hard to believe they are harmful.  I do, however, feel that unfermented soy products are harmful for various reasons. The article should explain this as well.

Please let me know if I can help further.

Gotu Kola and Mental Stamina

Q: Hi Karen

I have ordered all of Susun's books and look forward to reading them all. I haven't been able to find anything on Gotu Kola and was wondering what Susun thinks about this and whether she would recommend it as an infusion.

In addition to trying to get pregnant, I'm also trying to give birth to a dissertation and am finding I'm low on concentration and mental and physical stamina to get significant amounts of writing done. I read that Gotu Kola is helpful in this regard.

Any advice would be appreciated. I continue to make the red clover and nettle infusions daily.

thanks

Barheartflowr_3

A: In my years of study with Susun I have not heard of her teach about Gotu Kola (though I have heard of the herb). Though she does occasionally recommend an herb from abroad, she focuses on those which
grow locally, usually weeds. Perhaps this article on improving memory will have a few ideas to help.

I feel inclined to suggest Oatstraw infusions drunk regularly, of course in addition to being sure to take regular breaks, walks, fresh air, and get sound night sleeps and solid meals. I have heard that rosemary is good for memory. Although this is not your problem I link this with mental focus. I also find low blood sugar levels can effect this. This is a stressful endeavor, and takes its extra toll on us. This can be remedied simply with frequent small meals consisting of slow carbs and proteins.

Q: hi Karen,

thanks so much for all the good advice. I didn't realize that Gotu Kola is a foreign herb. Unfortunately, I didn't react well to Oatstraw when I tried this, probably because I'm sensitive to grains, but I will try the other things you suggest.

with best wishes

A: Yes, I would love to hear how you are doing as you try ideas, if you wish to share. Gotu Kola is native to "Australia, Pacific Islands, New Guinea, Melanesia, Malesia and Asia" - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gotu_Kola

Comfrey Leaf Infusion Safety

Q: Hi Susan:

I read your article at Glenbrook farms on healthy bones and did some research on the herbs you use for the infusions. I wanted to incorporate the infusions into my lifestyle to help my bones during postmenopausal years.

I have experienced breast cancer twice, 2006 being the most recent. hormone receptor positive. I have 4 years remaining on Femera (a chemotherpy drug) Two bone density test 2005 and 2007 are below the normal I guess for women my age. I have become leary of these finding and the doctors recommendations. Both maternal and paternal women in my history have experienced deminished bone density, but nothing severe. Otherwise I feel I am and active, healthy 56 year old who wants to take care of my bones without the depressing side effects of prescribed meds.

Can you tell me if the oatstraw, nettle. red clove, or comfrey leaf infusions (each seperately) are ok to take? Also can you comment on this information I found at an herb site I frequent and shop at on occasion?

Mountain Rose Herbs

Comfrey Leaves
Precautions

"Not recommended for internal use. Not to be used while pregnant. Not to be applied to broken or abraided skin.

"Comfrey was widely used and recommended until the mid-1980s, when reports began to surface about the possibility of liver damage from the pyrrolizidine alkaloids that some plants contain. In 2001, the FTC and FDA combined to issue an injunction against products containing comfrey that were meant for internal use.

"This view has been countered by herbalists, who state that common comfrey, the plant most often used for medicinal purposes, contains only negligible amounts of those alkaloids. In fact, one laboratory study of three different sources of comfrey found no pyrrolizidine in one sample, and only negligible amounts in the other two. Still, many herbalists recommend that comfrey preparations should not be taken internally because of the possibility of liver disease and damage. Comfrey should also not be used by pregnant or nursing women."

Thank you in advance for your expertise,

Barheartflowr_3

A: So wonderful you wish to drink herbal infusions. All the herbs you mention are like nourishing foods to me, so I see no reason for concern. I understand the debate about Comfrey, so would do best to refer you to a thread at our forum where the debate has been shared by some, for various viewpoints on it: Comfrey - internally - safe? - help me research?! As well, since you ask of Susun (she does not have internet to be able to correspond through email), here is a bit she has written:

Herbal Allies for Pregnancy Problems
Some people feel that Comfrey is not safe to use during pregnancy. Some people feel comfrey is not safe to use internally at all. I disagree. The roots of comfrey do contain compounds that are best avoided during pregnancy. (As do all parts of the wild plant.) In fact, I rarely use comfrey root because of the possibility of liver congestion, and I strongly caution those who have had hepatitis, chemotherapy, or alcohol problems to strictly avoid comfrey root. Yet even these people can benefit from use of comfrey leaf infusions. I harvest the flowering stalks when they are fully formed; and I am careful to use the cultivated garden comfrey, which grows very tall and has purplish, pinkish, bluish flowers. I avoid wild comfrey which stays rather small, even when flowering, and has cream-colored, white, or yellowish flowers.

Natural Remedies for Breastfeeding Concerns
~ Comfrey roots (Symphytum uplandica x) contain the same liver-damaging compounds sometimes found in borage. But comfrey leaves do not.

...an Interview with Susun Weed...
And then the last one is an herb that I have used very consistently for more than a quarter of a century, and that’s Comfrey Leaf. And you may be surprised by that because if you’ve heard anything at all about herbs in the past couple of years you may have heard some warnings about Comfrey. What my studies show me is that those warnings are true about comfrey root and I don’t use the root of the Comfrey. But the leaf, so far as I can tell is absolutely benign. As a matter of fact there was a man named Henry Doubleday who worked very hard all of his life to create courses of Comfrey that would be completely safe to eat. And he set up a Henry Doubleday Research Center in England where there’s a group of people there who have been eating Comfrey as a cooked green for three generations now, through pregnancies, lactations and no harm to anyone.

Natural Health and Healing in the Wise Woman Tradition
Like the women she has long been associated with, comfrey has a mixed reputation. I use lots of comfrey leaf, brewed as a strong infusion (put one ounce dry herb in a quart jar, add boiling water to top, cap tightly, steep overnight); but I rarely use comfrey root -- if for no other reason than that comfrey will colonize the garden if her roots are disturbed. The healing agents in comfrey are concentrated in the petiole, or leaf stalk, and the flower stalk. Cultivated comfrey has sterile flowers, so I harvest while it's flowering, cutting leaf and flower stalks near the ground and hanging them individually in a dark, well-ventilated place to dry.

Healthy Menopausal Years the Wise Woman Way
Comfrey (Symphytum) leaf is free of the compounds (PAs) found in the root that can damage the liver. I have used comfrey leaf infusion regularly for decades with no liver problems, ditto for the group of people at the Henry Doubleday Research Foundation who have eaten cooked comfrey leaves as a vegetable for four generations.

Minerals Make the Difference
Comfrey (Symphytum uplandicum x) is controversial. Ingestion of its roots can cause severe liver congestion. The leaves are safe, though labeled otherwise.

Here are two resources Susun lists in New Menopausal Years the Wise Woman Way:

"The Comfrey Controversey." Journal of the Northeast Herbalists Association. Winter, 1994
Awang, D.V.C. "Comfrey." Canadian Pharm Journal. 101-4, 1987

I actually commend Mountain Rose. By law, they are required to state that warning. In addition they have added the voice of many who think differently about plants than does the FDA, "This view has been countered by herbalists, who state that common comfrey, the plant most often used for medicinal purposes, contains only negligible amounts of those alkaloids. In fact, one laboratory study of three different sources of comfrey found no pyrrolizidine in one sample, and only negligible amounts in the other two."

I personally enjoy comfrey leaf infusions and have shared them with my son since he started drinking other than milk. I also take anything in moderation.

Please let me know if I can help further.

Foods for nauseous cancer patients...

Q: Hi there,
My mother recently underwent 10 radiation treatments after the removal of a cancerous brain tumor. They gave her 4 one week and 5 the next and 1 the next giving her the two weekend off. she is now not eating or drinking ..she has no apetite and i was hoping you had an idea of what would taste good for her. She has always been a strong person and the change could be from the medicine. My dad is at wits end..I'll be going to visit and stay for a few days this week and was hoping to have some ymmy ideas .. She presently can't stand the smell of grease and stuff that my dad has been trying to force her to eat ? He is 83 and she 81 ? Any good advice for me would sure be appreciated. Thanks in advance

Barheartflowr_3

A: My thoughts are with you and your family. Is there anything at all that she craves? Your mom has been through so much, physically and emotionally. I can only imagine what she may be going through. She needs to heal deep. I am sure she needs much beyond just food, but as you know nourishment is essential right now. When healing often we need simple foods - broths are top of the line for this for me. Defat the broth if fats are nauseating to her. Is nausea part of the issue? I prefer chicken bone broth, but if better for her to start a simple potassium rich vegetable broth may be good. I would also try some nourishing herbal infusions, are you familiar with them? - though not great amounts of the Red Clover blossom if she is on blood thinners. Please let me know how I can help further...

Q: Thanks for your advice...
I was held up for the week and was unable to go see my parents but i phoned twice a day. After I got mad and sent them some lists with acidic foods and alkeline ..so they could stop feeding the cancer ? My dad realized they had to make decisions for her. She has improved since last Monday quite alot and the doctor apparently increased the steroid she has been given ? What effects will we have to watch for now ? I will make some vegetable soup this weekend for her. And I'm not sure what she has been craving but i'll find out. I know that she likes bacon but the smell makes her ill to her stomach. She eats it with eggs in the morning. They have always eaten alot of fats and whites ? Hard to let them know to stop it all ? Seafood and salmon are something they have quite alot of usually too. So I'll do my best when I go.
Nausea is definately part of the whole thing. But at least she's been up and about and not lying in bed waiting for the inevidable ?
She has previously undergone 2 lobe removals for cancer twice when she was in her 50' s and once in her 60's again they took one out on the other side..then she had a breast removed in around 1998 .. and then they found a tumor in between her lungs that they shrunk a few years ago and it remained unseen with tests until they found the tumor ? She is a strong lady at 81 and I'll make sure to let you know how things go. Thanks for your concern and answers.

Barheartflowr_3

A: This must be so hard to watch in someone you love. I am glad you will keep me updated. After 80 years of eating one way it is hard to change, and I certainly would not try to change it at this point. I have found for many, though, our own innate passion for health leads us to some seemingly odd cravings in times of trial. Most often I have seen these be a draw toward simplicity, the least processed and complex foods and flavors - broths and salads. I personally prefer chicken bone broth, but say the veggie broth as a second for vegetarians. You could make a bean soup with broth and some bacon to give that flavor, but diffuse the fat, good well cooked greens and even a little live sauerkraut in it - great for gut flora. And hey even a side of white bread for dipping :) Or shrimps and greens sauteed in a broth. In the end though you can't be there all the time. I imagine it would be hard to let go and let others make choices especially when they feel improper. I am glad to hear she is up and moving around. It is hard to say how she will respond to the steroid when there is so much else going on. I wonder why the choice for that and to increase it?

love and blessings,
Karen Joy

Q: Hi again,
I went to see them and I felt like I was in the way. I was wondering if you've ever heard of how THC works in the treatment of cancer patients who won't eat anything ? Living in canada it's very easy to get marijuana or the pills they give people to take. The steriods they had her on ran out three days back and mom fell back into a pit ? Then they took her to the doctors yesterday and got her back on them again? I know by your reaction they aren't that good? So maybe the THC deal could be something to try ? I have her doctor calling me sometime in the next day or two . Thanks again for all your help ..I did forward all the information about what to try etc. I'm not sure if they followed any advice or not ?

Barheartflowr_3

A: Susun speaks of using marijuana to help increase appetite for cancer patients in her book Breast Cancer? Breast Health! She says the prescription Marinol is not as effective as smoking the dried leaves and female flowers. Do you know what the doctors are hoping the steroids will do? What do you mean she fell into a pit?

THC use for Cancer

Q: Hi Susun.

My mother has undergone brain cancer tumor surgery just recently and the steroids she is on are the only thing helping her ... when they ran out last week she stopped eating completely ..which is what happened a couple of weeks after the surgery.. I'm wondering how long they'll be able to keep her on the steroids as I know Karen Joy had concerns about those ? She has access to straight THC powder and I was hoping you would know the amount to use daily for her. She had two angioplast surgeries in the past and I know that her heart rate might increase with the use of marijuana. So if you have any idea or a doctor who could tell us. Please, because shortly they will have to stop using the medicine and I'm afraid that that will be her demise. Thanks in advance
... We are in BC Canada ...

Barheartflowr_3

A: Hello, Susun does not have internet. Justine and I answer emails for this reason. This time of year Susun takes off of her free phone consultation night to be able to focus on home and writing books. I am sorry she can not answer for you. Did you try the forum or email group I have mentioned? In the book i mentioned, Susun writes about smoking marijuana as the best way...

Q: Hi there,
If I had the cancer .. no problem , i smoke it daily to ward off anything i might have lurking ? Being 49 and my mom's first lung operation was when she was around 52 i think ? You can see my health worries? But she has had two lobes removed and doesn't smoke ? So I thought the straight THC power which she can attain easily where they live...could be of a big help. I have sent them pages of emails from forums that show how THC will help ... not sure if they'll listen as they think because i smoke it ... i must be crazy ? They are in their 80's so it's hard to change. I'm just hoping she'll keep eating once they remove the steroids out of her daily diet. My dad thinks she's okay because when she's on them she's able to do things. But they are really damaging so I'm not sure what's going to happen next . I've actually had quite a problem relating this info to them ? My 55 year old brother is also against marijuana and has been all of MY life....disregarding any good that I can do ...he has put me down but went on drinking and driving etc ? So I will hope to hear good things from somewhere. If you get any info on the amount to put in a gel cap ( straight power form) please do let us know so I can at least try it when or if the time comes they allow me to care for her. I'm suppose to be the person who gets that job when my dad can't do it? NOt sure if that will happen now. Thanks anyways and do keep in touch.

Barheartflowr_3

A: In Breast Cancer? Breast Health! Susun writes: "Isn't smoking bad for the lungs? No. Smoking herbs from a pipe is a traditional medicinal treatment to open the bronchi and warm and tone lung tissues. Unless you're allergic to all smoke, your respiratory system will appreciate an occasional gentle 'smoking.'" When helping others we often have to learn about them and work from there. The leap from where they are in life to what WE might do if in the same situation may be too big to be worth taking when life is tenuous enough already. Perhaps knowing more of what they are comfortable with you can choose from a list of choices what might best help. It is not just about what option we use, but how we work with those we care about to help them feel safe, knowing we value their comfort levels.

Sore Breasts

Q: Hi.. I was reading your entry about cystic breasts and that you have many remedies..

I have had horrible cystic breasts all my life.. Now 42..
Over the past months.. Instead of being swollen and cystic just a week or 10 days BEFORE my period.
They are now incredibly swollen and painful for 3 weeks of the month.
????

I can not figure out why... I am hypothyroid and take T3 & T4 for it and have for years.

I have tried edgar casey’s castor oil packs in the past.. As well as homeopathic remedies.. Which have seemed the best to rid of them..
But now that they are over a size larger just from the swelling, I am in so much discomfort I am looking for more help.

Can you recommend anything that you have found to be helpful..
I don’t drink coffee.. I do eat chocolate(oops)

Many thanks!

Barheartflowr_3

A: Have you tried any of the ideas in this article on PMS, specifically relieving sore breasts:

~20-30 drops of the tincture of cleavers, another common weed, works wonders. This plant, also called "goose grass" was used as a black tea substitute by the colonists. The dose may be repeated every hour or up to 6 times a day.

~ Women who get a lot of calcium and magnesium from their diet (leafy greens, yogurt, and many herbs are rich in these minerals) have less breast tenderness. Increase the minerals in your diet with a cup or more of red clover/mint infusion daily.

~ Large cabbage leaves, steamed whole until soft, and applied as warm as tolerable, can be used as a soothing compress on breasts which are sore and swollen.

And please let me know if I can help further as you explore your options. I am always available through email.

Q: Karen
Thanks so much for your email, and helpful ideas..

My acupuncturist mentioned something about cabbage leaves which is why I was searching your site.. Thanks for the how too.
Does this reduce the water retension, or just ease the pain, do you know?

Also.. The link to being magnesium or calcium is very interesting.. I was told I was magnesium deficient in the fall.. So I’ll get right on that red clover/mint infusion. I am not quite sure of “infusion”.. If I get red clover tea and mint tea and steep it, is that what you mean?

Thanks so much karen.. And happy fourth!

Best.

Barheartflowr_3

A: I do believe the cabbage actually reduces some of the water retention as it is not a pain killer. Yes it is amazing how many women benefit simply for increased magnesium. An infusion differs from a tea in how much herb is used and how long it is steeped. You may use tea bags, but will have to use enough to equal on ounce of herb per quart jar you are filling. I use an ounce of Red Clover blossoms (I do not use tea bags though since I can not see the quality of the herb), and complement this with a nice pinch (or perhaps a tea bag) of dried mint. I pour boiling water over to the top of the quart jar, cover and let sit on my counter for at least 4 hours, sometimes overnight, then strain and drink.

Write any time!! I am happy to answer questions, and always enjoy hearing how you are doing, what is working or not...

Q: Karen.
Thanks SO much.. It is so wonderful for finally get some help for this.. My western docs seem so unable to me. Actually I have been trying to find a doctor who will actually work with my alternative approaches but this seems so hard to find. Upsetting, as my acupuncturist and homeopath have helped me with so much, it is upsetting to not be able to find a doc to work with them. ( note I am in boston, so if you have heard or know of a great doctor, I would love to know his/her name)

Ok.. Back to breasts! Hahah
I was introduced to a woman named Joanne Larsen, who teaches at the Bancroft School in Worcester MA. She has written a book on Self Breast Massage.. she called me on Friday and was just so fascinating all her knowledge. She told me that like the foot/reflexology, that the breast also represents every part of the body, and the nipple specifically to the glands. And to try doing the self breast massages.

With regard to the magnesium.. I am thrilled that that is so helpful. And when you say to take the Red Clover blossoms in an infusion, is that because that is stocked with magnesium? Or should I be or also be taking magnesium pills.

Thanks so much.. I can’t tell you how helpful it is to have someone who is not only able to listen.. But also have so much great help, advice and support! Perhaps that is the best medicine in itself.

Thanks so much karen.

Best..

Barheartflowr_3

A: I so much agree with you!

I can’t tell you how helpful it is to have someone who is not only able to listen.. But also have so much great help, advice and support! Perhaps that is the best medicine in itself.

This medicine can not be overlooked!! Have you ever read Susun Weed's Seven Medicines? You may enjoy it :)

Red Clover and Mint are mineral rich, specifically calcium and magnesium. I personally prefer food sources of minerals and vitamins. Some other mineral rich herbs and foods are:

Foods - leafy greens, seaweeds, nuts, whole grains, yogurt, cheese, potatoes, corn, peas, squash, beans, figs

Herbs - Oatstraw, licorice, kelp, nettle, dulse, burdock root, chickweed, althea root, horsetail, sage, saspberry leaf, red clover, valerian, yellow dock, dandelion greens, carrot tops, pastley leaf, evening primrose

These I get from Susun's New Menopausal Years book. Susun also mentions that some things that deplete magnesium are - hot flashes, night sweats, crying jags, alcohol, chemical diuretics, enemas, antibiotics, "soft" water, excessive fat intake.

Breast self massage - so lovely! I think all women should learn it, perhaps even a part of health classes for teenage girls.

lots of love,
as always write any time,
Karen Joy

Lichen Sclerosis

Q: Hi, I was wondering if I can get the information on treating Lichen Sclerosus in the vulva. Supposedly it's a condition I'll have to live with the rest of my life but I don't want it to get worse and the only treatment I can get from the medical system is a cortisone cream.

Thanks for what info you can send.

Barheartflowr_3

A: Hello, I am glad you wrote. I would not accept it is something you will have to live with all your life. My research shows at this point it is a label for a set of symptoms with no known clear causes as far as the MDs are concerned. In this case, as others like it, I hear doctors prescribe some drug and say accept it will always be there and this will only be temporary help. Perhaps the case is different for you. Aside from the label given can you describe what you are experiencing, when and how long? Also did the person who diagnosed it offer a cause and explanation why he or she thinks you will have it for life?

A wonderful nourishing herb for those with skin conditions, especially the "mysterious" ones, is deep digging burdock root. The root tincture is what is used, 1-4 dropperfuls drunk in water a day. Similarly, the roots of Dandelion and Yellow Dock help some women.

If you are postmenopausal, Motherwort tincture, 25 drops in water drunk each morning, can help bring moisture and thickness to the vaginal walls.

Topically, you could try some herb infused oils. Again which herbs are best will be for you to explore. Plantain leaf oil is soothing for most, as is Calendula flower oil. Comfrey root oil is healing to damaged tissues.

Cortisone cream is the common response by doctors to relieve symptoms, which it can do successfully, but does nothing to nourish the health of the tissue. Long term it has its own irritating effects, like thinning tissues.

Comfrey leaves can be prepared as infusions and drunk to support skin health and elasticity. The infusions can also be used topically on the skin, daily as a sitz bath if vaginal or anal tissues are involved. You may wish to try this before the oils. Or if using the oils, do so with breaks in between so air can get to your skin.

The above suggestions take steps not only to help soothe the discomfort, but add to long-term nourishment of the tissues to keep this from returning.

A final thought involves your diet and digestive health. It has been found that some dry itchy heated skin conditions respond well to increased good quality fats in the diet, and for some an increase in water. But the latter without the former may not be enough. There is also speculation that lichen sclerosis is an autoimmune response. Some have found that many autoimmune conditions abate when digestive health is increased. This can be done with the root tinctures mentioned above - burdock, yellow dock or dandelion - and yogurt or other fermented foods to help increase gut flora.

Simply, focus on the skin's overall health and all that supports it, internally, externally, with thoughts, actions, exercise, and fresh air and sun.

I am happy to dialogue with you further on it, please let me know how I can help.

Blessings,
Karen Joy

Q: Hi Karen,

your reply was warming (and informative), also your prompt response was much appreciated,
thanks.

[response in below, with earlier note in italics]

Hello, I am glad you wrote. I would not accept it is something you will have to live with all your life.
Good to hear.

The short version is that for health reasons I was on a serious cleanse (Gerson) which included doing 4-8 enemas a day. I did this for about a year ( I know that many enemas and for so long isn't my best option), unfortunately about 90% of the time fecal water from the enemas would get into my vulva. The specialist say that isn't the cause of my Lichen Sc. but I disagree. About a few months after I started the enemas I started to get some itching in my vulva area. The gyno couldn't see anything so told me to do the basic stuff (cotton undies, mild soap...), about 6 months after that she finally started to see growth so she put me on the steroid, and told me what I most likely have. I saw a different gyno who took a biopsy and confirmed I had Lichen Sc.

It's now about 2 years since the itching first started, once the bacteria builds (on a daily basis) sometimes my skin acts up. My natural skin color was brown since the disease it's now pink (fortunately there is still some brown area where there wasn't an itching problem). About 1/2 and 1/2 coloring, the itching was around the inner lips and the clitoris. My inner lips look smaller than they use to be and every time I see or feel them they are always swollen. The itching is now mild and periodic, before it was severe and often. I change my underwear 2-3 times a day and rince 1-2 times a day, both those actions help keep the itching at bay. I believe sexual friction exasperates the itching (but I'm not sure as I haven't been sexual for a couple of years)

Also did the person who diagnosed it offer a cause and explanation why he or she thinks you will have it for life?
No, the specialist (gyno at the woman's health clinic, the people are very good there but are traditional) basically just said the way to manage the symptoms is to apply the cream often (gave more detailed instructions) until symptoms go away, then for the rest of my life, 2 times a week apply a small pea size quantity, and have a yearly check up. In doing so it will cause the deterioration/damage to stop, and keep my vulva skin functioning well, that has been their experience. Everyone else is saying the cream will cause thinning of the skin and by the time I'm 60 my vulva will look and feel like it's 80 or 90.

A wonderful nourishing herb for those with skin conditions, especially the "mysterious" ones, is deep digging burdock root. The root tincture is what is used, 1-4 dropperfuls drunk in water a day. Similarly, the roots of Dandelion and Yellow Dock help some women.
I might hold off on the burdock root as it seems that when I eat it it upsets my digestive system and my vulva sometimes itches a little for a very short period of time. I have dandelion tincture I will start using that

If you are postmenopausal, Motherwort tincture, 25 drops in water drunk each morning, can help bring moisture and thickness to the vaginal walls.
No not yet, but lack of moisture in my body is one long term complaints-my body is very dry and has been for 15 years. I believe it's due to a digestive problem

Topically, you could try some herb infused oils. Again which herbs are best will be for you to explore. Plantain leaf oil is soothing for most, as is Calendula flower oil. Comfrey root oil is healing to damaged tissues.
I will experiment

Cortisone cream is the common response by doctors to relieve symptoms, which it can do successfully, but does nothing to nourish the health of the tissue. Long term it has its own irritating effects, like thinning tissues.

Comfrey leaves can be prepared as infusions and drunk to support skin health and elasticity. The infusions can also be used topically on the skin, daily as a sitz bath if vaginal or anal tissues are involved. You may wish to try this before the oils. Or if using the oils, do so with breaks in between so air can get to your skin.

Good to know. How about sunlight, will periodically exposing my vulva for short periods of sunlight help. I tried it a few times it felt good, but doesn't mean it is in my best interest. I will be by myself for 5 months in the middle of the woods, with a restriction on my water use, so cleaning well and frequent sitz baths is/will be challenging.

I am working on my digestive problems. I also have a sluggish liver and I am starting to take some pills that seem to be helping ( I believe they are helping because my body bloating seems to be abating).

Simply, focus on the skin's overall health and all that supports it, internally, externally, with thoughts, actions, exercise, and fresh air and sun.

I am happy to dialogue with you further on it, please let me know how I can help.

Thanks again, and blessings to you.

A: You are welcome, write any time....

Yes, with the damage you did to your intestines there must be great damage to your intestinal flora. And if you feel you had digestive problems before this, it likely only got worse. An imbalance can cause overgrowth, as well, I agree with you fecal water in your vagina will cause problem, and daily for a year! Yes, please please do take Dandelion root tincture, 10-20 drops in water with each meal or about 3 times a day. And please please be kind to your digestive system function and allow it a rest. Nourish with probiotics and yogurt if possible. The Dandelion tincture can help with digestion, therefore important absorption, and nourish your liver. What is in the pills you are starting to take? If you wish to share.

I am glad you will experiment with the suggestions. And yes sun sounds good to me, but in small amounts to damaged tissue.

If you will be somewhere where water use is restricted, yet you have not yet found other options for relief, I invite you to consider if this trip is necessary right now. Your health and happiness are treasures. You are a beautiful loved person, please continue to give yourself the same value love and kindness, as I hear you do in your emails to me :)

much love,
