I'm at a standstill regarding the benefits of flax seeds: Should flax seeds in any form (raw/oil/gel caps) be avoided for women with fibroid's associated with estrogen dominance? I just began taking grape seed oil (gel caps) and thought flax seed would also work, but now I'm not so sure because of all I've been reading regarding the estrogenic qualities of flax and the potential to increase fibroid size/bleeding (which in my case is heavy). Thanks in advance!
I am enclosing an article of Susun's on help with fibroids.
In regards to flax, first I am including a note from Susun in regards to flax seed oil:
"My lipid chemist friends tell me that flax seed oil goes rancid within five minutes of being pressed. They say that any oil in a black bottle is ready to become rancid as soon as the bottle is opened; bad news. They grind flax seed immediately prior to using. Small amounts of flax seed should be OK during pregnancy, but the laxative effect could conceivably trigger a miscarriage. If you are comfortable taking an oil that can contribute to heart disease and cancer (due to rancidity), then you are fine. If not, then perhaps ground flax seed is a better choice."
Also from Susun: But don't get her started on that awful-tasting flax oil women are told to swallow by the spoonful to ward off breast cancer. The reason it tastes so awful is because it's rancid, Weed says. "The chemist friends that I've asked about flax oil tell me it's like cancer in a can because of the rancidity factor." She suggests buying whole flax seeds instead, and grinding them in a coffee or spice grinder. "When ground and cooked in baked goods like bread and muffins, flax seed is a wonderful addition to the diet."
So most likely having some freshly ground flax seed at times will not be detrimental, but eating it as a whole food in that manner is very different than taking the oil or taking any capsules. With Grape seed oil, again, I wouldn't bother taking the supplements. Most supplements simply contain too little to be of much use or can actually be toxic ...
