I am looking at using nettles in my diet. Are they as effective tossed in food, as they are in a tea? I used to make the tea, or get lazy, and not do at all. Much easier to use as is in food, if health benefits are the same.
Further, how much calcium is in a teaspoon of nettles?
I am not sure what you mean by tossed in food? If you are talking about adding dried nettles into food, no point in doing that. You can cook with fresh nettles -- same as any leafy greens that you use ... but making the infusions with dried nettle leaves is best, especially for getting your minerals. And it is so easy, far easier than cooking. Just heat up the water, put one ounce of dried nettle by weight into a quart canning jar, fill with boiling water, put the lid on and let it steep overnite on the counter. The next morning strain and drink thru-out the day. Is this how you are preparing your nettles? It's so hard to know what someone means when they say tea -- as what Susun does is not usually considered a tea nor does she call it tea...
Also, nettles is not something that is taken by teaspoons, so can't say how much calcium is in a tablespoon -- you should drink at least a cup if you can, most of us drink a quart a day, even more... It's a food, not a medicine so it's not something that is measured in dosages. Herbalist Paul Bergner did a mineral breakdown on some herbs, including nettle. You can take a look here: https://medherb.com/Materia_Medica/The_Mineral_Content_of_Herbal_Decoctions_.htm
That should help give you an idea on some of the mineral contents of the herbs Susun uses for infusions ....
